The Dieting Cycle (Binge/Purge Cycle)
When you are in the dieting cycle, you begin by restricting in a variety of ways: the diet starts, you don’t eat what you really want, you eat less than you want or need, you feel bad about what you eat, and/or you starve yourself.

Perhaps you eventually eat the forbidden food, but with a feeling of losing control. You might then feel you have failed and become angry with yourself. On the other hand, you may completely deny that you started eating the food again by saying you are taking a break from the diet or will just have “a little bit”. Or, maybe you eat it but then throw it up, exercise madly trying to burn it off, or beat yourself up for eating it.

Ultimately, you don’t lose weight that you will keep off or stop thinking about food. Instead, it leads you even deeper into a feeling of powerlessness. You feel unable to control yourself.

Perhaps, you blame your problems (being alone, unloved, angry) on food and your body. You tell yourself that if only you could lose weight, everything would be okay. You pay huge amounts of energy and attention to who looks thinner or fatter than you. You feel bad every time you eat something you think is “bad” for you.

You think it is your fault. There is something wrong with you. You are flawed.
